Shit-eatin' grin...

Yep, I've got a shit-eatin' grin and it won't go away. Got my braces off today.

Got em on at the end of September, 2007... Which means these bastards drove me crazy for a year and 9 months. Was a pain in the ass while they were on, but oh man was it worth it. I'm pretty happy with my new grill. My teeth weren't that bad to begin with, at least not in the front. It was my molars causing problems. My back teeth were all over the place and it was causing problems for my jaw. I have TMJ and we thought that by straightening my teeth it would ease my jaw problems. And if it didn't work, then at worst I would have an awesome smile. So far I can't tell if my jaw is any better, but damn... My teeth sure as hell look good. Feels good too, got so used to them being so bumpy, I can't stop running my tongue across them. I haven't been able to stop smiling all day. My orthodontist wanted to go longer, but I told her they don't have to be "perfect". They look a million times better than they did 2 yrs ago, and I can't afford to do anymore treatment past June. My last day at Sony is next Friday, and my insurance stops July 1st, so we needed to wrap it up now. She said I'll still have to find an orthodontist in Texas to do routine check ups and stuff.

Oh yeah, here's a comparison shot:

Jeez, now my blog looks like one of those damn tooth whitening ads.

So anyway, there's not much to say, other than it sucked having them on and it feels great having them off. The 'taking them off' part sucked pretty bad too. My uppers were ceramic, and they shattered into bits and pieces, while my metal lowers came right off. She had to take a Dremmel Tool and file off the rest of the ceramic braces, then file off all the cement. It took what seemed like an eternity. She told me to go rinse, I looked in the mirror and had white powder all over my face and mouth, cement dust. Ick. It smelled bad when she was doing it too.

You know that awesome feeling of newly cleaned teeth after a dentist visit? Well I had that today times 10. It was awesome getting those damn braces out of my mouth, but then I immediately went to the dentist for my anual cleaning and check up. The hygenist was able to get off any remaining cement that was left behind, and cleaned out all the crap I couldn't get with the braces in the way. My teeth look so clean and shiny... I feel conceited because I keep looking at my teeth in anything reflective I can find. It'll take me a couple days to get over it.

So anyway, I'm very happy to have it all done with. I go back Thursday to pick up my retainers, everyone says they're not fun. I'm predicting a goofy lisp for a while. Yay... Oh well. It's worth it. This smile is way too expensive to piss it away by not wearing my retainers.

So that's about it. I'm gonna go brush my newly-naked teeth, and FLOSS like a mo-fo. It's sad that i'm actually excited to floss. Go ahead, laugh at me. But anyone who's had braces appreciates it I'm sure.

Till next time...
